The value of information in asymmetric all-pay auctions

چکیده

This note analyzes a two-player all-pay auction with incomplete information. More precisely, one bidder is uncertain whether his rival has a head start, i.e., an initial advantage in the auction. The game has a unique Bayesian Nash equilibrium outcome whose shape depends on the expected head start. In equilibrium, the potentially stronger player generates an informational rent if and only if her potential head start occurs with high probability or is sufficiently high. This result differs from the case of uncertainty about cost or valuation of the opponent, in which the potentially stronger player always obtains an informational rent. JEL classification: C72, C73

Common-value all-pay auctions with asymmetric information and bid caps

We study a class of two-player common-value all-pay auctions (contests) with asymmetric information under the assumption that one of the players has an information advantage over his opponent and both players are budget-constrained. We extend the results for all-pay auctions with complete information, and show that in our class of all-pay auctions with asymmetric information, su¢ ciently high (...

Common-value all-pay auctions with asymmetric information

We study two-player common-value all-pay auctions in which the players have ex-ante asymmetric information represented by …nite partitions of the set of possible values of winning. We consider a family of such auctions in which no player has an information advantage over his opponent. We …nd su¢ cient conditions for the existence of equilibrium in monotonic strategies. We further show that the ...

Munich Personal RePEc Archive Charity Auctions for the Happy Few

Recent literature has shown that all-pay auctions raise more money for charity than either winner-pay auctions or lotteries. We demonstrate that first-price and second-price winnerpay auctions have a better revenue performance than first-price and second-price all-pay auctions when bidders are sufficiently asymmetric. Lotteries can also provide higher revenue than all-pay auctions. To prove thi...

Auctions with Private Entry Costs

Auctions with Private Entry Costs We study auctions where bidders have private information about their entry costs and the seller does not benefit from these entry costs. We consider a symmetric environment where all bidders have the same value for the object being sold, and also an asymmetric environment where bidders may have different valuations for the object. In these environments, the sel...

An elementary proof of the common maximal bid in asymmetric first-price and all-pay auctions

We prove that the maximal bid in asymmetric first-price and all-pay auctions is the same for all bidders. Our proof is elementary, and does not require that bidders are risk neutral, or that the distribution functions of their valuations are independent or smooth. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Rank-Based Methods for the Analysis of Auctions∗

A new method is proposed for the analysis of first price and all pay auctions, where bidding functions are written not as functions of values but as functions of the rank or quantile of the bidder’s value in the distribution from which it was drawn. This method gives new results in both symmetric and asymmetric cases with independent values. It is shown that under this new method if one bidder ...
